Dear Vicki: I am a Water/Earth. And while I believe that being these elements facilitates my energy healing practice in some ways, in other ways they seem to be having trouble relating to the business aspect of my business. Part of the problem is that it’s very difficult to predict the flow of my energy. I can be bright and outgoing for a while, but then cheery suddenly eludes me and I need to retreat. I’ve been told I come across as a calm, gentle Zen-like character, but that isn’t the kind of hustle one needs to promote oneself and one’s practice. I had a business coach help me for a while, but what she wanted me to do completely stressed me out! Marketing and getting myself out there is extremely challenging for me. I love my healing work but my Water and Earth don’t seem to want it to grow. Is there hope for my practice? Signed: Tired of Trying
Dear Tired: First, please know that you are not alone. Many people find marketing and promotion difficult, especially people with your energy composition. Water wants to be alone and private as much as possible. When not alone, Water seeks the company of smaller groups of like-minded people who enjoy pondering esoteric and philosophic topics. Earths like regular connection with almost anyone, especially if they’re able to help, but don’t usually like to talk about themselves. This means that your Water/Earth combo makes you especially good at the more subtle healing arts like energy work, but less good at marketing. And while a Water/Earth combo can make it difficult to predict your energy flow, it isn’t impossible. So let’s look at how to do that and then take on the more daunting challenge of marketing using your Water/Earth combo.
One reason you may find it difficult to “predict” your energy levels is that Water and Earth have conflicting desires when it comes to socialization. Your Earth will be happy interacting with people. That makes you come off as bright and cheery because Earths love connecting! But your Water doesn’t necessarily enjoy a great deal of socialization, so will retreat much as you have experienced. In fact, this push/pull around the topic of socializing is very characteristic of Water/Earth relationships. These two elements relate via the Controlling Cycle, with Earth controlling Water. The good news for Waters, however, is that Earth doesn’t control Water by diminishing it. Instead, Earth, which is all about balance, merely guides Water using what can be called gentle control. Water wants alone time, but when it becomes too extreme, Earth will step in and make sure Water doesn’t get too reclusive.
If you can start viewing your energies as an exquisitely balanced dance between Water and Earth, guided by Earth’s control of Water and desire for balance, you can probably begin predicting what to expect from your energies. Your Water will need alone/quiet time but your Earth will only allow so much of that before “demanding” connection with people. If you can bring some structure to your time, something your Water won’t think to do on it’s own because Water is used to taking on the structure of others, I think you’ll be able to manage your time in any way you want. It will mean stepping into a bit of Wood to plan accordingly, but that shouldn’t be too hard because we all have Wood somewhere in our energetic make-up. On any given day, make sure you plan the quiet time your Water needs (meditation, reading, etc.), but also include some connecting time to make your Earth happy. That can be social or work related, it won’t matter to your Earth. And it can be in person or via social media. Again, your Earth won’t care. Just try for some planned balance, which will make your Earth happy and less worried about too much Water. The planning will help you market, too, so let’s take a look at that.
By it’s very nature, marketing is exceedingly yang. It’s all about getting your message “out there” to others. The message also needs to be planned; as does the way it is delivered. This means that at every level, marketing uses a lot of Wood energy. Your Water is pure yin and your Earth is about balance, so between your primary and secondary elements you really don’t have much yang energy front and center. But if you work to build your Wood for the times you want to focus on marketing and promotion, this will help a lot. You can wear green clothes and a malachite crystal, use peppermint oil, and drink dandelion or milk thistle teas. This will increase Wood energy for the times you need planning and presentation.
And to help your Water and Earth get comfortable with the idea of marketing so that it doesn’t completely stress you out, don’t think of the effort as self-promotion, which your Earth will abhor, or as hanging out with lots of people, which your Water will dislike. Instead, find your Zen-like Water place and your Earth desire to help others and just share that with people. The best marketing is never about self-promotion, it’s about how the people being marketed to will be helped by what someone has to offer. So try to think of it not as marketing yourself, but marketing ways to improve people’s lives. Your Earth will love this! For your Water, keep your in person marketing efforts to smaller groups rather than huge gatherings. Your Water will be more comfortable there and your Earth will love the opportunity for deep connections. Social media is also a great way for Waters to reach out.
A final suggestion is to use the deep knowledge your Water has to ponder how best to do this in a way that is comfortable for you. The truth is that your Water feeds Wood on the Nurturing Cycle, so it should be fine introducing some Wood energy to help with the marketing. Your Earth will be less comfortable because Wood controls Earth, but if you can stay focused on helping people with what you have to say, your Earth will be happy. And really, the bottom line is that you are a perfect mix to help a great many people find health, healing, and joy in their lives. Just honor who you are as a Water/Earth, introduce a little Wood, and you will be brilliant!
